Chiropractic FAQ

Why do clients receive relaxing muscle therapy at each visit?

Through extensive training and post-graduate work, Dr. Mueller came to the conclusion that muscle therapy and chiropractic treatments compliment one another, because they are both focused on the health and well being of the client. A very basic way of explaining how they work together is as follows; muscles connect to bone. If a muscle is tight, it can pull the bones out of alignment and vice versa. If a bone is misaligned (subluxated), it can cause the muscle to become tight. In most cases, both of these together are what cause us to have health conditions usually associated with aches and pains. At Chiropractic First, most often you receive muscle therapy first and your chiropractic adjustment following the therapy. If the muscles are relaxed and in a normal state, the chiropractic adjustments are more gentle on the client and have a better chance of "holding" in the proper position for a longer period of time. This will allow our clients to recover at a faster rate.

What kind of adusting techniques are utilized by Dr. Mueller?

We offer various gentle Chiropractic techniques (manual, drop table and instrument adjustments) to serve our wide range of clients. Even though our clients seem to get well faster with manual adjustments, a small percentage of our clients receive instrument adjustments (no "twisting" or "popping"). We communicate with our clients to utilize the techniques they feel most comfortable with.

What makes your office unique?

We incorporate physiotherapy, relaxation and massage therapy, and rehabilitative stretching into most recovery programs for our clients. We have discovered that most clients in pain experience a faster and more thorough recovery when we use a combination of treatment techniques. We strive to improve your quality of life by helping you reduce pain and facilitate the body's ability to heal itself and remove the roadblocks that prevent the body from healing.

What happens if chiropractic can't help me?

We have a working relationship with other health care professionals. If yours is not a chiropractic case or a client needs further diagnostic testing, the proper referral will be made. We want our clients to get well.

How does chiropractic care work?

Chiropractic helps to remove postural imbalances and structural misalignments that can accumulate in our bodies over time. Our spines change and develop problems just like our teeth, eyes and heart. Left unchecked, these changes may lead to pain, stiffness or other more serious problems.

The nervous system is a key part of your body. It is the communication system between your brain and all of your body's muscles, organs and tissues. For your body to remain healthy, your nervous system must function well. For your nervous system to function well, it must be free of interference. The spine is the most common site of nervous interference because nerves travel from the spinal cord through openings on either side of the spine to get to all of your cells and organs.

Each of us is born with the ability to heal and recover from illness. Our bruises heal, cuts mend and common colds are overcome. Your nervous system regulates this inborn healing ability.

Think of your brain as a central command post sending and receiving information through telephone wires (your nerves), which branch out to connect all areas of a city (your body). A short circuit in a wire cuts off communication just like misalignments in your spine can put pressure on the nerves. This pressure interferes with your nervous system, affects your ability to self-heal and may prolong injury or illness.

The customized care you receive from your chiropractor can help to improve your posture, muscle balance and mobility. It can also restore the integrity of your nervous system and get rid of pain quickly, so you can get back to feeling good today!

How often should I see Dr. Mueller?

This is a common question that we get asked. Since chiropractic care depends on the healing abilities of each client, results can vary from client to client. Everyone responds differently. Some detect changes in a few days or weeks. In severe cases it may take weeks to months before showing progress. Other factors that influence healing time: severity of injury, how long client had injury, does client's job or daily activities aggravate injury, etc.

Some clients opt to continue with some type of regular chiropractic care after they recover from injury. These clients show up for their visits feeling great. Their interest in wellness and prevention helps make sure that once they get well, they stay well. These clients usually choose to visit our office once a month. Some come more frequent and others less. We give recommendations and let our clients choose.

How does chiropractic help your immune system?

Doctors of chiropractic analyze your spine to locate vertebral subluxations, a serious condition that causes spinal distortions and interferes with your nervous system function. Over a hundred years of chiropractic and osteopathic observations have demonstrated to many patients that spinal care improves immune function. The exact mechanism of how the spine and the nervous system affect the immune system is one of the hottest areas of scientific inquiry. This new field is called psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). Keeping your spine healthy under chiropractic care is one of the best ways of keeping your immune system functioning at its optimum level, so you may remain healthy and whole.

How does chiropractic help with the common cold?

Chiropractic doesn't treat the common cold. However, chiropractic clients have noticed that their natural resistance to colds increases and chiropractors have often heard patients tell them that, "I haven't had a cold (or if I get a cold I get over it so much faster) since I've been under chiropractic care". Natural resistance is the only reason why your cold goes away rather than lasting for weeks, months, or your entire lifetime! Chiropractic care can help raise your natural resistance to disease by removing a serious interference to your proper body function: vertebral subluxations.

Do many people see chiropractors?

The non-surgical, drug-free healing nature of chiropractic provides benefit to the health of millions of other people worldwide each year. Most chiropractic patients experience real relief and improved general well being, and continue to make regular visits a part of their healthy lifestyle choice.

At what age can you go to a chiropractor?

Any age! The earlier spinal problems are detected, the easier they are to correct. At our clinic we have treated patients from newborns to age 89.

Why should I see a Chiropractor?

From professional athletes to homemakers, engineers to electricians, young people to seniors, chiropractic care has been the answer to optimum health. Many people see a chiropractor for back, neck or other joint problems. Still others find that regular visits to their chiropractor keep them in peak condition.

Regularly a dentist checks our teeth, an optometrist checks our eyes and a doctor checks our blood pressure and heart. Yet, we take the spine - a crucial component of our body - for granted. Call your family's chiropractor today because regular checkups of your spine can help you maintain better health.

My friend goes to the chiropractor once a month, how come?

Many people have chronic conditions that are not curable, but they are manageable. Regular care keeps their condition stable and may prevent spinal degeneration. Similar to visiting a dentist to prevent tooth decay, people visit chiropractors to prevent spinal decay. Research has shown that regular chiropractic care keeps people healthier and stronger.

What is Subluxation?

A subluxation - short for Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) - is an abnormal condition commonly involving several vertebrae. It occurs when vertebrae in your spine lose their normal position and/or motion.

Subluxations most often occur in response to the daily stresses placed on our bodies. Common things such as emotional stress, poor posture from sitting in front of a computer or standing at a workstation for a long time may lead to subluxations. Car accidents, improper lifting or work injuries are other common causes of VSC.

Many health problems, including subluxations, are subtle in the early stages of development. In the same way that a cavity or heart problem can be overlooked before causing pain or other warning signs, a spinal problem may develop and exist for years before causing difficulties.

To detect the possible onset of a VSC, your chiropractor will conduct a thorough examination, including a detailed history, orthopaedic, neurological and postural evaluations, and possibly an X-ray (radiographs) if he or she deems these to be necessary to fully assess your condition.

Your chiropractor is uniquely qualified to recognize and diagnose spine related injuries. He or she is the only Doctor with specialized training to correct spinal problems and their multiple effects.

How long do Doctors of Chiropractic go to school?

Today's graduating Doctors of Chiropractic have studied and trained in a post-secondary college or university for at least seven years. Just like medical or dental students, they must first complete undergraduate study before applying for admission to a chiropractic college.

Becoming a chiropractor is a demanding and highly rewarding path that includes a minimum of 4,500 hours of intense academic study including classroom learning, clinical science and internship training. During the course of their training, he/she will have studied the following three areas:

-- Basic sciences, including anatomy, physiology, pathology (the study of diseases), biochemistry, clinical sciences, X-ray interpretation and differential diagnosis.
-- Training in the philosophy and practice of chiropractic.
-- Clinical internship with emphasis on hands-on practice.
Your chiropractor is a primary contact provider just like your family physician, optometrist or dentist. You do not need a referral from your medical doctor to see a chiropractor.
